Kwekerij Aarts Installs 2 MW CO₂ Heat Pump in Greenhouse Expansion
Kwekerij Aarts has deployed a 2 MW CO₂ air-to-water heat pump for its new greenhouse expansion in Noord-Brabant. This installation is significant as it represents one of the largest heat pump applications in the greenhouse industry, with implications for energy efficiency and sustainability.

Kwekerij Aarts, located in Asten-Heusden, has implemented a 2 MW heat pump to support a 3.6-hectare greenhouse expansion, marking a notable advancement in greenhouse energy solutions. The system, operational since early 2026, was selected over alternatives such as combined heat and power (CHP) due to grid constraints.
This air-to-water heat pump, using CO₂ as a refrigerant, offers an outlet temperature of up to 80°C and integrates with an extensive low-temperature heating system. A MEI subsidy assisted in funding, and the project includes a 1 MW CHP unit for energy management. The success of this installation could stimulate further adoption of heat pump technology in the greenhouse sector, especially as interest grows in sustainable practices.
