Launch of Carbon Destroyer 1 for CO2 Transport in North Sea Project Greensand by 2026

CARBON CAPTURE

The Carbon Destroyer 1, an offshore CO2 transport vessel, will begin operations in 2026, marking a significant development for the Greensand Project and carbon capture and storage (CCS) across the EU. Built at Royal Niestern Sander in the Netherlands, the vessel is designed to handle pressurized CO2 and meets high safety and environmental standards.

From 2026 to 2030, new terminals and floating units will facilitate large-scale CO2 transport in the North Sea. The Northern Lights project in Norway aims to expand its capacity from 1.5 million tons to at least 5 million tons of CO2 per year by 2028.

The Carbon Destroyer 1 will connect emitters in Denmark to offshore storage in the North Sea. Shell’s CO₂Next terminal in Rotterdam is set to be the first hub for liquid CO2 by 2026. Additionally, the shipbuilding sector is increasing orders for new vessels, with Capital Gas ordering four multigas/LCO2 ships for delivery between 2026 and 2027.
