Leonhardt & Blumberg has retrofitted the 6,000-dwt vessel Hansa Drejoe with a wind-assisted propulsion system (WAPS) at Royal Niestern Sander Shipyard. The installation of Econowind VentoFoils aims to provide approximately 10% additional thrust, improving fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
The remaining three vessels in the series, Hansa Christiansoe, Hansa Fanoe, and Hansa Graesholm, will also be equipped with WAPS and are expected to arrive in Europe for commissioning in early 2027. These initiatives support compliance with the EU Emissions Trading System and the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Design Index under IMO regulations. The trend towards WAPS technology is growing, with 107 vessels reported to be equipped as of Q2 2026, indicating an industry shift towards greener maritime operations.
