Liberia to Launch Sovereign Carbon Initiative with $25/tCO₂e Carbon Contribution by March 2026
Liberia's Sovereign Carbon Initiative will be implemented on March 1, 2026, requiring airlines and maritime operators to pay $25 per tonne of CO₂ equivalent. This initiative, announced on January 27, 2026, aims to reduce emissions in line with international agreements and support local climate efforts. Revenues will be managed through the Liberia Carbon Investment Fund, contributing to biodiversity protection and climate resilience.

Beginning March 1, 2026, Liberia will implement a carbon contribution of $25 per tonne of CO₂ equivalent for airlines and maritime operators. This is part of the Sovereign Carbon Initiative launched on January 27, 2026, by the Carbon Markets Authority.
The initiative requires companies to measure and reduce their emissions, covering 50% of emissions for flights and ships to/from Liberia. It aims to mobilize sustainable resources for local climate challenges, aligning with the Kyoto Protocol and Paris Agreement.
Revenues will fund the Liberia Carbon Investment Fund. Liberia joins Djibouti and Gabon in pioneering carbon initiatives in Africa, supported by the African Sovereign Carbon Registry Foundation and the African Union.
