Little Reddings Primary School Achieves Net Zero Performance under DfE Programme
Little Reddings Primary School in Hertfordshire demonstrates effective net zero operation following its completion in June 2025. The project, part of a £20bn DfE initiative, utilized advanced sustainable technologies and construction methods to reduce carbon emissions significantly.

Little Reddings Primary School was constructed under the Department for Education's £20bn rebuilding programme, aimed at achieving net zero operation. Completed in June 2025, the school has shown a significant reduction in energy consumption, performing at 41.44 kilowatt-hours per square meter, below the mandated target of 52 kWh/m².
The building incorporates a hybrid heat pump system and a bio-solar roof with 270 PV panels, further enhancing energy efficiency. Its embodied carbon stands at 585.4 kg CO2/m², well below the RIBA target of 1,000 kg.
The project employed offsite-manufactured closed-panel systems, reducing waste and ensuring high sound insulation. Effective project management minimized disruption during construction, ensuring operational continuity. Insights from the project will inform future school developments.
