Lloyd's Register Advocates LNG for Cruise Industry Transition
Lloyd's Register's report emphasizes LNG as a viable alternative fuel for the cruise industry, with 30 vessels currently operational. The analysis highlights methane slip as a significant concern, although advancements in engine technology and carbon capture could mitigate this issue.

Lloyd's Register's recent report underscores LNG as the most developed and readily available alternative fuel for the cruise sector, noting 30 operational LNG-capable cruise ships and an additional 29 on order. Key concerns include methane slip, which poses a global warming threat 28 times greater than CO2; however, engine manufacturers have achieved a 75% reduction in methane slip over the past 25 years.
The report also explores bio-LNG and e-LNG as potential alternatives, projecting cost-competitiveness with methanol and ammonia by 2050. Additionally, onboard carbon capture technologies could reduce costs by 30% when utilized with LNG compared to traditional fuels, providing significant long-term benefits.
