Lower Burrell to Secure $15.8 Million for Sewage Pump Station Replacement
Lower Burrell plans to borrow $15.8 million to replace a failing sewage pump station and 50-year-old pipeline. This project is critical to prevent sewage overflows and comply with federal regulations following recent environmental violations.

Lower Burrell is set to borrow $15.8 million, primarily through two loans from PennVEST, to replace a malfunctioning sewage pump station and a deteriorating pipeline. The council will conduct a third reading of the ordinance on April 29 to approve financing.
The project includes a larger pump, a one million-gallon holding tank, and one mile of new piping. This upgrade aims to mitigate sewage overflows experienced during heavy rains, as highlighted by recent violations of the federal Clean Stream Act.
The loans will be repaid over 20 years, with an interest rate starting at 1% for the first five years. The city has accumulated approximately $1.5 million towards this project through previous sewage rate increases, and they expect to begin construction in the coming months.
