Maharashtra Proposes Amendments to Explosives Safety Rules Following Nagpur Blast
In response to the Nagpur explosion that killed 22, the Maharashtra government is drafting a proposal to amend the Explosives Rules, 2008. The proposal, initiated by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, aims to incorporate international safety standards and address gaps in the current regulations. The draft will use standards such as NFPA 495 and OSHA PSM to enhance safety in explosives manufacturing. Police are also pursuing legal action against the owner of SBL Energy, which was involved in the incident.

Following a deadly explosion at SBL Energy Limited in Nagpur that resulted in 22 fatalities, the Maharashtra government has commenced a proposal to amend the Explosives Rules, 2008. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the initiative, which aims to incorporate three international safety standards: NFPA 495, OSHA Process Safety Management, and IEC 60079.
Officials are assessing the explosives production chain for automation opportunities to enhance safety. The state intends to clarify safety specifications in response to ambiguities in the current regulations.
The timeline for the proposal remains uncertain as consultations with industry stakeholders are necessary. Additionally, legal proceedings are being initiated against SBL Energy owner Alok Chaudhari, who is currently absconding.
