Malta Maritime Forum Discusses EU ETS Impacts in Brussels
The Malta Maritime Forum (MMF) visited Brussels to address the EU's Emission Trading System (ETS) and its unintended consequences on business and carbon leakage. The delegation met with various EU officials and industry associations to present data showing negative impacts on EU ports and recommend alternatives, including a temporary freeze on ETS for maritime transport. MMF highlighted that transshipment is shifting to non-EU ports, undermining the competitiveness of EU ports and creating economic risks for small island states like Malta.

The Malta Maritime Forum (MMF) visited Brussels to discuss the EU's Emission Trading System (ETS) with EU institutions and industry associations, aiming to influence the review of the Directive due in July. The MMF presented data on the negative repercussions of ETS, particularly concerning carbon leakage and business impacts.
They argued that ETS fails to meet climate objectives, causing transshipment to shift to non-EU ports, reducing the competitiveness of EU ports. Recommendations included freezing ETS for maritime transport until a global decarbonization measure is established and extending derogations for small islands. The MMF delegation engaged with EU officials and expressed gratitude for the support from Maltese MEPs.
