Mara, a US defense tech startup, has raised $7 million in pre-seed funding to enhance its autonomous counter-drone system, Spike. This funding aims to transition Spike from field tests to operational deployment, addressing the increasing threat posed by low-cost FPV drones in modern warfare.

Mara has successfully raised $7 million in a pre-seed funding round led by Khosla Ventures, with participation from several investors including a16z Speedrun and Night Capital. The funding will facilitate the development of Spike, an autonomous counter-drone system designed to combat the rising threat of inexpensive FPV drones that have become a significant cause of combat casualties.
Spike integrates a Spotter targeting system and a Seeker kinetic interceptor, providing 360-degree coverage and the ability to engage multiple threats simultaneously. Currently, Mara aims for ground-mounted deployment by the end of 2026, with vehicle-mounted versions to follow in 2027.
The company is also involved in pilot projects in South Korea and has engaged with military partners in the UK, Czech Republic, and Ukraine. The growing reliance on FPV drones highlights an urgent need for effective countermeasures, presenting both opportunities and risks for Mara as it scales its operations.
