Mast Reforestation Completes Innovative Biomass Carbon Removal Project in Montana

CARBON CAPTURE

Mast Reforestation has achieved a significant milestone with the completion of its MT1 project in Montana, a groundbreaking initiative that addresses the pressing challenge of post-wildfire recovery. By burying 10 million pounds of trees destroyed by fire, the project effectively prevents carbon dioxide emissions that would have resulted from traditional pit burning. Instead, these fire-damaged logs are sealed within purpose-built underground chambers designed to inhibit decomposition for at least a century.

Launched just four months ago, the MT1 project has already filled and capped its storage chamber, transitioning to continuous monitoring operations to ensure the integrity of the carbon storage process. This innovative approach not only serves as a method for carbon removal but also facilitates the generation of carbon removal credits, which are now available for presale on platforms such as Ceezer and Cloverly. Mast anticipates delivering up to 5,000 tonnes of vintage carbon removal credits by the first quarter of 2026 through registration with Puro Earth.

Proceeds from these sales will support reforestation efforts in the fire-affected region, which is rich in biodiversity and cultural heritage. With seedlings sourced from local wild seed, Mast's commercial nurseries are already gearing up for planting in spring 2026, aiming to restore the area to its original lush state. The project is not only a triumph in carbon dioxide removal technology but also represents a scalable model for ecological recovery that bolsters local economies.

Mast's commitment to monitoring the project’s carbon credits is robust, employing sophisticated systems to analyze wood composition and track weight records. Thus far, the data indicates that the underground storage chamber is functioning as intended, with no recorded emissions, further solidifying Mast's role as a leader in carbon removal strategies.

Looking ahead, Mast Reforestation aims to broaden its reach, targeting an estimated 2.8 million tons of fire-killed trees across Montana’s recently burned landscapes. This ambitious plan highlights the company’s dedication to innovative and effective solutions in the fight against climate change, while simultaneously fostering ecological restoration and community engagement.
