MBTA Launches Resilience Roadmap to Combat Climate Change Impacts on Transit Network
The MBTA has introduced its inaugural Resilience Roadmap aimed at fortifying transit infrastructure against climate-related challenges. This strategic plan outlines 30 resilience strategies, with 23 prioritized for action within five years, to enhance service reliability and safety amid increasing severe weather incidents.

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has released a comprehensive Resilience Roadmap to address climate impacts on its transit network. The plan encompasses both immediate and long-term strategies, focusing on nine priority areas, including enhancing power system resilience, protecting stations from flooding, and reducing heat exposure for riders.
Key projects involve upgrading facilities to withstand extreme temperatures, improving signal and communication systems, and implementing flood protection measures. Notably, the MBTA has allocated $10 million for Blue Line pump room upgrades and $15 million for new bus amenities to assist riders during adverse weather.
The roadmap aligns with the state's ResilientMass program, aiming for collaboration with regional partners to adapt to evolving climate conditions. Sustained investment and knowledge sharing will be critical to the successful implementation of this plan.
