MCF Demands Forensic Audit into R600 Million Water Waste in Makana Municipality
The Makana Citizens Front (MCF) has urged the Minister of Water and Sanitation to perform a forensic audit of water grants for Makana Municipality from 2010 to 2022, following a complaint to the South African Human Rights Commission regarding water infrastructure failures. The MCF highlights significant budget overruns in the James Kleynhans Water Treatment Works project and irregularities in contracts, including a R6.5 million contract for Jameson Dam upgrades with no reported work completed. The party claims ongoing water issues violate constitutional rights and threaten local businesses.

The Makana Citizens Front (MCF) has requested a forensic audit into water grants for Makana Municipality from 2010 to 2022, citing a complaint to the South African Human Rights Commission about severe water infrastructure issues. The MCF notes that the budget for the James Kleynhans Water Treatment Works project has escalated from R191 million in 2019 to R414 million, despite being labeled '89% complete.'
They raise concerns over a R6.5 million contract for upgrades at Jameson Dam, alleging R5.5 million was paid without any reported work. Further, a tender awarded in September 2020 for pump sets failed shortly after installation. The MCF connects these failures to constitutional rights violations, highlighting issues like E. coli contamination and inadequate water quality, impacting local businesses and livelihoods.
