Mexico to Launch Carbon Standard and Registry Platform by January 2026
In a significant move towards strengthening its climate strategy, Mexico plans to unveil its own carbon standard and registry by January 2026. This initiative is designed to complement the forthcoming emissions trading scheme (ETS) and subnational carbon tax offsetting schemes, which are critical components of the country's efforts to mitigate carbon emissions.
By developing a domestic standard, Mexico seeks to overcome the certification constraints often associated with international guidelines, thereby enabling more streamlined and effective carbon management. As the nation prepares for this launch, it emphasizes the importance of aligning its regulatory framework with its broader climate commitments, particularly in the transport sector, which is pivotal to its 2030 climate pledge. This development not only signals Mexico's proactive stance in climate action but also positions it as a potential leader in the regional carbon market.
