Microsoft to Purchase 2.85 Million Carbon Removal Credits from Indigo Over 12 Years
Indigo Carbon PBC has announced a 12-year agreement with Microsoft to sell 2.85 million soil carbon removal credits, enhancing support for U.S. farmers and promoting regenerative agriculture. This transaction marks the third collaboration between the two companies, following previous purchases of 40,000 tonnes in 2024 and 60,000 tonnes in 2025.
Microsoft's commitment to being carbon negative by 2030 aligns with Indigo's focus on high-integrity carbon removals, having already issued nearly one million tonnes of CO2 carbon removal credits since 2018. The deal, valued between $171 million and $228 million, also includes credits approved under the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market's Core Carbon Principles. Regenerative agriculture practices, which improve soil health and increase resilience, are recognized for their potential to sequester significant amounts of CO2 and provide financial incentives for farmers.
