Missouri Senate Considers Tax Credits for Critical Mineral Production
The Missouri Senate is evaluating Senate Bill 1553, which proposes tax credits not exceeding $40 million annually for in-state production of critical minerals. The U.S. government has identified 60 critical minerals, with over half found in Missouri, including lead, copper, phosphate, silicon, and silver. The bill aims to bolster domestic mineral production amid national security concerns, particularly regarding reliance on foreign sources for materials used in military applications.

The Missouri Senate is deliberating Senate Bill 1553, which would provide tax credits for companies involved in the extraction and production of critical minerals in the state, capped at $40 million annually. This follows the U.S. government's expansion of the critical minerals list to 60 last year, with over half present in Missouri.
The updated list includes 10 newly recognized minerals such as lead, copper, and phosphate. The initiative is driven by concerns over reliance on foreign minerals, particularly for military applications like the F-35 fighter jets. The bill requires approval from the full state senate to progress to the Missouri House.
