Naming Contest for UK's First Small Modular Reactor at Wylfa
Anglesey residents are invited to propose names for the new small modular reactor plant at Wylfa, emphasizing local heritage and community spirit. The project, backed by GBP2.6 billion, aims to enhance energy capacity with three Rolls-Royce SMRs, potentially expanding to eight units.

Great British Energy - Nuclear is seeking name suggestions for the new small modular reactor (SMR) plant at Wylfa, Anglesey, focusing on community input and local relevance. The UK government allocated GBP2.6 billion toward this project, which will feature three Rolls-Royce SMRs, with the potential to expand to eight.
The 470 MWe Rolls-Royce SMR design aims to provide reliable baseload generation for over 60 years, with 90% of construction occurring in factories to minimize on-site activity and risks. The Wylfa site previously hosted two Magnox units until 2012, and prior plans for a new power station by Hitachi were abandoned in 2020. This initiative underscores the importance of community engagement in energy projects.
