NARA Climate Community Biochar Project Issues First Carbon Credits in Kenya
The NARA Climate Community Biochar Project has successfully issued and sold its first carbon dioxide removal credits, totaling 144 tCO2e. This initiative, based in Kenya's Turkana region, emphasizes the dual benefits of carbon sequestration and local community empowerment, particularly in refugee-led contexts.

The NARA Climate Community Biochar Project has issued and sold its first batch of verified carbon credits, amounting to 144 tCO2e, registered as C-Sinks on the Carbon Standards International (CSI) registry. This project operates in the Kakuma and Kerio communities of Kenya, addressing invasive Prosopis juliflora to produce biochar, which sequesters carbon while also improving soil health for agricultural use.
Key to its success is the comprehensive measuring, reporting, and verification (MRV) technology developed by Planboo. The initiative supports food security and economic opportunities, providing approximately 123 jobs, with a workforce comprising 50% women and refugees. The project's impact could enhance resilience in underserved areas, potentially serving as a model for similar endeavors globally.
