NASA's Wake Shield Facility: Pioneering Semiconductor Production in Space

In February 1994, the space shuttle Discovery was launched with the Wake Shield Facility (WSF) to create a cleaner vacuum environment for semiconductor production. Despite communication issues that prevented the WSF from being released as planned, five usable semiconductor films were produced while the facility remained tethered to the shuttle.
The experiment demonstrated the potential of space-based manufacturing, as the vacuum achieved by the WSF exceeded that of Earth-bound labs, making it suitable for growing high-purity materials like gallium arsenide. Following this mission, the WSF was flown again on STS-69 and STS-80, further validating its capabilities. These experiments have contributed to advancements in materials for high-speed electronics and solar energy applications.
