National Grid Expands Dynamic Line Rating Technology Across 585km in England and Wales
National Grid is expanding the deployment of Dynamic Line Rating (DLR) technology, covering an additional 585km of transmission routes. This initiative, under a five-year contract, is expected to save consumers up to £50 million by optimizing existing power line capacities.

National Grid is set to implement Dynamic Line Rating technology across 585km of its electricity transmission network in England and Wales, aiming for completion by 2028. This rollout will enhance the capacity of 39 circuits, totaling over 900km, primarily along north-to-south transmission routes, allowing for an average 8% increase in power capacity.
The initiative follows a successful two-year trial on a 275kV circuit in Cumbria and builds on eight years of collaboration with LineVision. DLR's deployment will reduce constraint payments and is part of broader efforts, including advanced power flow controllers and AI integration, that together saved £21 million in constraint costs during the RIIO-T2 period.
