Navy Installs 3D Printer on USS Essex to Enhance Operational Readiness

The USS Essex now features a 3D printer capable of fabricating aluminum parts, marking a significant advancement in naval supply capabilities. The Naval Postgraduate School, alongside Xerox, facilitated the printer's installation and conducted diagnostic tests during the Rim of the Pacific exercise on July 8-9.

This technology is expected to allow sailors to create essential components, such as fuel adapters and valve covers, directly on the ship, promoting self-sufficiency. Training for personnel on the new equipment is underway, and efforts are being made to expand the types of materials the printer can utilize.
