NERC Issues Level 3 Alert on AI Data Center Risks to Power Grid
NERC's Level 3 alert signals increased regulatory scrutiny on large data centers due to significant risks to grid stability. The alert is a response to growing electricity demands from AI infrastructure and aims to implement mandatory reliability standards by 2027.

The North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) has issued a Level 3 alert regarding threats to the power grid from large data centers, highlighting the urgent need for industry action to address rising electricity demands. This alert, the third of its kind in NERC's history, follows incidents of significant load loss events in Virginia and Texas, where data centers unexpectedly disconnected from the grid.
Recommendations include developing detailed modeling data for computational loads and installing fault recording devices to monitor data center performance. NERC plans to establish mandatory reliability standards for data centers, pending approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). As AI infrastructure expands, data centers could consume up to 17% of U.S. power by 2030, raising concerns about grid stability and potential regulatory changes.
