New Data Centers: La Porte County and Palo, Iowa Make Progress with Microsoft and Google
La Porte County has approved a joint agreement to benefit from a Microsoft data center, while Palo, Iowa, is advancing a new ordinance for a Google data center with notable regulatory differences from previous plans.
La Porte County Redevelopment Commission approved an agreement on April 22 to benefit from a Microsoft data center, followed by a similar vote from the city of La Porte's Redevelopment Commission on April 29. In Iowa, the City of Palo's Planning and Zoning Commission recommended a new ordinance for a Google data center near the Duane Arnold Nuclear Power Facility, which is being revitalized to support this operation.
Unlike prior proposals with Linn County, Palo's regulations do not include a water usage agreement with local oversight; instead, Google will obtain a water permit from the Iowa DNR. The ordinance now moves to the City Council for public hearing, pending a comprehensive site plan and project timeline, as well as emergency response and road use agreements before construction can commence.
