New Electric Arc Furnace Supports Green Steel Initiatives in the UK
The Materials Processing Institute has launched a seven-tonne Electric Arc Furnace at its Green Steel Centre in Teesside, enhancing capabilities for low-carbon steelmaking technologies. This facility is believed to be the UK's first research Electric Arc Furnace, enabling steelmakers and researchers to innovate and test sustainable production methods.

The Materials Processing Institute has installed a seven-tonne Electric Arc Furnace at its Green Steel Centre in Teesside, funded by a £2.9 million grant from Innovate UK. This facility, the only of its kind in the UK, is intended to support the development and testing of low-carbon steelmaking technologies, enabling collaboration among steel producers, academic institutions, and technology partners.
The furnace allows for experimentation under industrially relevant conditions, facilitating advancements in materials and processes. The project is part of the EconoMISER programme within the Foundation Industry Sustainability Consortium, aiming to enhance green steel production methods and reduce emissions in the steel industry.
