New Mexico has established the Office of New Americans, transforming it into a statutory division within the Department of Workforce Solutions, following the signing of House Bill 124 by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham. This change ensures recurring state funding and long-term planning for the division, which supports the roughly 21% of agricultural workers and 24% of construction workers who are immigrants.
As New Mexico attracts high-tech industries like quantum computing, the division will also assist employers with the immigration process for skilled workers. The bill is effective May 20.
