New Regulations for Ground-Based Space Infrastructure in New Zealand
The NZSA announced that new regulations for ground-based space infrastructure (GBSI) will likely take effect in April 2026. GBSI operators must prepare for formal authorisation and comply with updated security and reporting requirements.

New Zealand's space regulatory landscape is set for significant change as the NZSA's updated guidance indicates that regulations for ground-based space infrastructure (GBSI) will be enacted in April 2026. Following the Outer Space and High-altitude Activities Amendment Bill passed in July 2025, operators must prepare for formal authorisation, which includes providing detailed information and ongoing reporting.
Existing GBSI operators will hold transitional authorisation until 29 July 2026 or the enforcement date of new regulations, whichever comes first. It is advised that operators document their security arrangements and due diligence processes before applying. The new regime coincides with growth in New Zealand's space sector, emphasizing the need for operators to familiarize themselves with compliance requirements.
