New York Issues Water Permits for Lansing Power Plant Amid Data Center Controversy
The New York State DEC approved water permits for Cayuga Operating Company, crucial for its operations. This decision occurs amidst public opposition to a proposed data center by TeraWulf, which shares ownership with the power plant.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has issued renewed water withdrawal and SPDES permits for Cayuga Operating Company’s coal-fired power plant in Lansing. This action follows opposition from Tompkins and Seneca County legislatures regarding a proposed data center by TeraWulf on the same site.
The permits, approved after a review of public comments, are not linked to the data center project, which TeraWulf CEO Paul Prager is pursuing. The water withdrawal permit limits Cayuga's intake from 245 million gallons to 1 million gallons daily, aligning with current operational needs.
Critics question the necessity of the permit given claims that the water intake system is no longer operational. Compliance with all regulatory requirements is mandated to safeguard public health and the environment.
