New York National Guard Collaborates with Swedish Military in Northern Lights 26 Exercise
Eighty New York Army National Guard Soldiers participated in the Northern Lights 26 exercise in Sweden from April 24 to May 8, enhancing military collaboration under the State Partnership Program. This deployment marks the largest training exchange since the partnership began in 2024, allowing U.S. troops to gain exposure to Swedish tactics and operational methods.

From April 24 to May 8, 2026, eighty New York Army National Guard Soldiers engaged in exercise Northern Lights 26 in Sweden, marking the largest training exchange since the inception of the State Partnership Program with Sweden in 2024. Participants included reconnaissance Soldiers from Troop C, 2nd Squadron, 101st Cavalry Regiment, and military police from the 105th Military Police Company.
Troop C experienced significant operational differences, including extended reconnaissance missions under Swedish command, adapting to new command structures and tactical approaches. Soldiers noted the advanced technology utilized by Swedish trainers, including methods to mask thermal signatures from drones. The exercise emphasized the importance of practical military cooperation and relationship building, highlighting the need for continued collaboration between the two nations.
