Northwestern Michigan College has commenced a $20 million geothermal project, resulting in the closure of the Cherry Lot for parking starting May 3, with anticipated reopening in September. The project includes drilling a borefield and laying distribution lines to supply six campus buildings with renewable energy.
The Board of Trustees has allocated $10 million in contracts and approved $15 million in bonds, along with $2.7 million in grants, bringing the total estimated project cost to $20.27 million. Construction will also involve temporary trenches and increased traffic, but efforts are in place to minimize disruptions during significant campus events.
