North Lincolnshire Council to Endorse UNESCO Biosphere Bid for Isle of Axholme
North Lincolnshire Council will vote on February 2 to endorse a bid for UNESCO Biosphere status for the Humberhead Biosphere, which includes the Isle of Axholme and surrounding areas. The initiative aims to highlight the region's vital peatland for flood management, biodiversity, and carbon storage, following a previous unsuccessful bid for Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty status. If approved, a formal bid will be submitted in September, with results expected in June 2027, requiring an annual financial contribution of £5,000 for the first two years.

North Lincolnshire Council will decide on February 2 whether to endorse a bid to UNESCO for the Humberhead Biosphere, which includes the Isle of Axholme and parts of Doncaster, northern Nottinghamshire, and East Riding. This initiative aims to recognize the area's peatland, which is crucial for flood management, biodiversity, and carbon storage.
The proposal follows a previous unsuccessful attempt for Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty status. The biosphere designation would focus on conservation and sustainable development without introducing new planning restrictions.
If approved, a bid to UNESCO would be submitted in September, with feedback incorporated by November and results announced in June 2027. Participation requires a financial contribution of £5,000 annually for the first two years.
