Northern Ireland Launches Comprehensive Strategy for Peatland Conservation and Restoration

CARBON CAPTURE

In a significant move for environmental stewardship, Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs Minister Andrew Muir has unveiled Northern Ireland's first peatland strategy, aimed at harnessing the potential of these vital ecosystems, which cover approximately one-eighth of the province. The strategy, approved by the executive, embodies a comprehensive 15-year plan that includes five strategic objectives and 26 actionable steps to combat biodiversity loss and climate change.

Muir articulated a vision where peatlands are recognized not merely as landscapes, but as critical allies in the fight against the climate crisis. As he noted, “We must embrace the power of peatlands as a nature-based solution.” These unique habitats, often likened to rainforests for their carbon storage capabilities, play a pivotal role in enhancing water quality, reducing flood risks, and providing habitats for at-risk species such as the hen harrier and curlew.

The strategy’s framework acknowledges the undeniable value that well-managed peatlands provide—both to nature and to the communities that rely on them. Muir highlighted the economic benefits of restoring damaged peatlands, noting that such efforts yield substantial returns on investment and create valuable green jobs.

To support this initiative, approximately £7.8 million has been earmarked for peatland restoration through the Environment Fund and the Shared Island Fund, extending through 2028. Additionally, the Peace Plus funding, amounting to around £40 million, includes a significant peatland restoration component covering approximately 12,500 hectares.

Muir commended local environmental groups for their pioneering work in peatland restoration, urging a collective effort to expand these initiatives across Northern Ireland. With recent substantial investments secured for restoration efforts, the minister expressed optimism about scaling up projects that not only restore the land but also bolster local economies and ecosystems.
