Norwegian Startup Blastr Negotiates Acquisition of South Yorkshire Steel Works
The UK government is negotiating with Norwegian startup Blastr to acquire Speciality Steel UK (SSUK), which includes the largest electric arc furnace in the UK. This acquisition aims to secure the future of steelmaking in South Yorkshire amidst ongoing challenges within the British steel industry, including the management of British Steel's plant in Scunthorpe.

Blastr, backed by Vanir Green Industries, has entered a five-week exclusive negotiation period with the UK government to acquire SSUK, which has been under the official receiver's control since August 2025. The acquisition would represent a significant turnaround for SSUK, which was declared 'hopelessly insolvent' by London's high court.
The Rotherham electric arc furnace and Stocksbridge works are pivotal for the UK steel sector, particularly in aerospace and defense. Successful completion of this sale would alleviate governmental challenges in managing the steel industry and support regional employment. However, Blastr must secure substantial financing, as it currently operates no steel plants and aims to develop a green hydrogen facility in Finland.
