NRT Initiates Alignment of Wildlife Conservancies with Carbon Credit Regulations
Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT) is aligning 22 community wildlife conservancies in northern Kenya with carbon credit regulations. This transition will enable the conservancies to independently manage their carbon credit resources following compliance with new laws by June 30, 2026.

NRT has begun a process to align its member conservancies with carbon credit laws, aiming for autonomy in resource management. The amendments to the Project Implementation Agreement will allow conservancies from Isiolo, Samburu, Laikipia, and Marsabit to manage carbon credits independently once regulations are met.
A Free, Prior and Informed Consent process has been initiated to engage stakeholders before the transition to a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) structure. The deadline for compliance with the 2023 Climate Change Amendment Act and 2024 Carbon Markets Regulations is set for June 30, 2026. Concerns over governance and transparency in previous carbon projects prompted this new framework, which aims to enhance community participation and oversight.
