Nueva Ecija Launches Southeast Asia's First Carbon Credit Project with Biochar Production
Project NuevaChar in Nueva Ecija, initiated in 2022, is the first carbon sequestration project in Southeast Asia to generate carbon credits through biochar production. The project, led by Governor Aurelio Umali and partnered with Alcom Carbon Markets Philippines, converts rice husks into soil enhancers, promoting climate-smart agriculture. In its initial rollout, 363 metric tons of biochar were distributed to farmers across 32 municipalities. The facility received validation from Puro.earth for its carbon dioxide removal, enabling carbon credit issuance. The project also includes training programs and partnerships with various institutions.
