Ocado Implements Beckhoff Technology for Automated Packaging Handling
Ocado has integrated Beckhoff's AFL technology in its customer fulfilment centres to enhance efficiency, loading up to 350 totes per hour. This automation aims to maintain high standards of order accuracy and dispatch reliability, crucial for expanding to new product lines beyond groceries.

Ocado's implementation of Beckhoff's Automated Fulfillment Loader (AFL) enhances its operational efficiency by automating the loading of up to 350 totes per hour onto delivery van frames. Each tote can weigh up to 20 kilograms, contributing to the need for automation to maintain a 99% on-time dispatch rate.
The AFL operates with a Beckhoff C6017 Industrial PC and incorporates safety-rated TwinSAFE I/O terminals for centralized control. This technology supports seamless integration of vision systems to locate totes accurately.
Ocado plans to extend these automation capabilities to sectors such as pharmaceuticals and clothing. The industry's shift towards automation is underscored by Tetra Pak's launch of its smart factory technologies and BBS Automation's advancements in Petri dish production systems.
