Octavia Carbon Secures Major Offtake Agreement to Enhance Direct Air Capture Technology in Kenya
Octavia Carbon, a pioneering force in direct air capture (DAC) technology within the global south, has secured a pivotal ten-year offtake agreement facilitated by the carbonfuture marketplace. This agreement will allow Octavia to deliver carbon dioxide removal (CDR) at kiloton scale, marking a significant milestone in the company's expansion strategy and further enhancing its partnerships with over 20 corporate clients committed to combating climate change.
The momentum generated by this agreement is expected to catalyze the scaling of Octavia's DAC projects in Kenya, a country strategically situated in the Great Rift Valley, known for its geological storage potential. The innovative initiative aims to safely deposit captured CO2 through collaboration with Cella, a carbon mineralization company, ensuring both environmental integrity and operational efficiency.
Founder and CEO Martin Freimüller expressed his enthusiasm about this development, underscoring the importance of their first kiloton-scale CDR purchase. He emphasized that this partnership with carbonfuture represents a significant leap forward for Kenyan DAC, contributing to the creation of high-integrity carbon credits.
Set to launch operations by late 2025, Octavia's flagship project, Hummingbird, is designed to initially capture 250 metric tons of CO2 annually, with ambitious plans to increase this capacity to 1,000 tons. This project not only reinforces Octavia's commitment to advancing DAC technology in Africa but also aligns with its mission to foster local partnerships in the fight against climate change.
The company has garnered recognition for its innovative approaches, including an independent digital monitoring, verification, and reporting (DMRV) system that enhances transparency in DAC operations, thereby reducing costs. Freimüller noted that the real-time DMRV co-developed with carbonfuture sets a new standard for compliance-grade carbon removal, validating the growing demand for high-quality DAC solutions.
As Octavia Carbon prepares to unveil more details about this transformative deal in collaboration with carbonfuture and the end buyer by 2026, it remains poised to play a crucial role in the evolution of carbon removal technology and its integration within local communities in Kenya.
