Oman Initiates Coral Reef Restoration to Enhance Marine Biodiversity
Oman’s Environment Authority launched a coral reef restoration project in the Daymaniyat Islands Nature Reserve, targeting damaged ecosystems and enhancing marine biodiversity. The initiative aims to cultivate 600 to 1,000 coral fragments utilizing direct aquaculture techniques, supporting marine habitats for economically important species.

The Environment Authority of Oman is implementing coral reef restoration projects focused on the Daymaniyat Islands Nature Reserve. This initiative aims to rehabilitate damaged reefs, enhance biodiversity, and establish a scientific database for monitoring and assessing climate change impacts.
Direct cultivation techniques will be employed, attaching coral fragments to rocky seabeds at depths of 5 to 12 meters. The project is in partnership with Sultan Qaboos University and supported by Oman LNG and the Sea of Oman Diving Team. The success of these efforts is critical for sustaining marine ecosystems and the economic viability of fisheries in Oman, as coral reefs are essential for marine life and the food chain.
