OSTP Assumes Space Policy Coordination Role Following National Space Council's Dissolution
In December, the White House issued an executive order revoking the National Space Council's 2021 continuation, leading the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) to coordinate U.S. space policy. OSTP's assistant director for space, Charlie Powell, indicated the office will oversee various tasks mandated by the order, including developing a National Initiative for American Space Nuclear Power, aimed at creating a fission power system on the moon by 2030.
Additional responsibilities include crafting new NASA exploration plans and adapting national space transportation policies. The Office of Space Commerce is also transitioning to report directly to the Secretary of Commerce, enhancing its role in commercial space activities.
