Panasonic Plans to Triple Lithium-Ion Battery Production for Data Centers by 2029
Panasonic aims to triple its lithium-ion battery production capacity by 2029 to meet rising demand driven by AI. The company plans to sell ¥800 billion (US$5 billion) worth of batteries in the 2029 financial year, quadrupling current sales. Panasonic reports that customers have pre-ordered about 80% of the required production, leaving limited output for new buyers. Additionally, Panasonic is exploring supercapacitors for energy storage, with plans to start production in the 2027 financial year.

Panasonic is set to triple its lithium-ion battery production capacity at its Japanese factories by adapting existing automotive facilities and potentially modifying its Kansas plant to increase datacenter battery output. This initiative is fueled by heightened demand for AI-driven server infrastructure.
The company anticipates selling ¥800 billion (US$5 billion) in batteries by its 2029 financial year, aiming for an 80% market share. With 80% of production already pre-sold, only a fifth of output may be available for new customers. Panasonic is also developing supercapacitors for energy storage, expected to launch in the 2027 financial year.
