Petrobras Initiates Carbon Capture and Storage Pilot Project in Rio de Janeiro

CARBON CAPTURE

In a significant advancement for carbon management in Brazil, Petrobras has announced its first carbon capture and storage (CCS) pilot project, set to take place in Rio de Janeiro. This initiative aims to inject an impressive 100,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide each year, underscoring the company’s commitment to pioneering decarbonization technologies.

This pilot comes on the heels of a landmark year for Petrobras, which achieved the reinjection of 14.2 million tonnes of CO2 into pre-salt reservoirs within the Santos Basin in 2024. Currently, Petrobras operates the world’s largest carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) program, accounting for approximately 28% of all global CCS projects, as reported by the Global CCS Institute.

All 23 of Petrobras’ pre-salt production platforms are equipped with advanced carbon capture systems that seamlessly integrate with enhanced oil recovery processes. The new pilot project is poised to build upon this established framework, reinforcing Petrobras’ strategy to minimize emissions while continuing to sustain energy output.

By launching this tender, Petrobras is not only signaling its commitment to large-scale carbon management but also its willingness to explore innovative models that could facilitate the broader application of CCS technologies throughout Brazil's energy landscape. This initiative marks a crucial step in the nation’s pursuit of sustainable energy solutions, reflecting an ongoing shift towards responsible environmental stewardship within the industry.
