Pleasure Island Beach Nourishment Project to Resume in March with Increased Costs

FLOW CONTROL

The beach nourishment project for Carolina and Kure beaches is set to resume in mid-March after being paused for a new dredge. The project's cost has increased to $26.5 million to accommodate the need for more sand, totaling 1.8 million cubic yards.

Officials aim to complete the project by April 30 to protect nesting sea turtles and shorebirds. Funding is sourced from federal, state, and county room-tax funds. The project originally began in November 2025 but halted in December 2025 due to equipment changes. Nearly 900,000 cubic yards have been pumped so far.
