Porirua's Sewage Storage Tank Cost Surges to $99 Million Despite Early Completion
Porirua's new sewage storage tank's cost has increased to $99 million, more than double the original $48 million budget. Construction began in 2022 and is set to complete in April 2024, ahead of schedule. The tank, capable of holding wastewater equivalent to three Olympic swimming pools, faced additional costs due to issues such as relocating native skinks and inflation. The project aims to reduce environmental wastewater overflow risks.

Porirua's sewage storage tank cost has risen to $99 million, more than double the original budget of $48 million set in 2022. The tank, which can hold wastewater equivalent to three Olympic swimming pools, is expected to be completed in April 2024, three months ahead of schedule.
Factors contributing to the cost increase include relocating native skinks, inflation, and upgrading infrastructure. The tank will store sewage during heavy rain before it is pumped to the Tītahi Bay treatment plant, significantly reducing wastewater overflow risks. As of late December, the pump station was commissioned, and earthworks were delayed due to skink relocation efforts.
