PostEurop Advocates for Enhanced Grid Infrastructure to Support Decarbonization of Corporate Fleets

PostEurop, the representative body for European postal operators, is seizing the opportunity to engage with the European Commission regarding its Clean Corporate Fleets Initiative. The urgency of this initiative is underscored by the postal sector's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing sustainability within operations. With one of the largest low-emission fleets in Europe, comprising over 109,000 electric vehicles and 14,000 powered by alternative fuels, the sector is making significant strides, sourcing 77% of its electricity from renewable sources and implementing circular economy practices.

However, substantial challenges remain, particularly concerning existing grid infrastructure, which hampers the widescale deployment of zero-emission vehicles. The high total cost of ownership for these vehicles further complicates operators' competitiveness in a market characterized by price sensitivity.

To address these hurdles, PostEurop implores the European Commission to increase grid capacity and streamline permitting processes to facilitate necessary upgrades. Such actions are vital to enable operators to adopt zero-emission heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs) and support the broader climate ambitions of the EU.

As the transition to zero-emission solutions progresses, the demand for energy will escalate, particularly with the shift towards electric HDVs, which have significantly higher energy needs than light commercial vehicles. Without corresponding increases in grid capacity, operators will struggle to charge these vehicles effectively, undermining the potential for emissions reductions. Thus, the Commission must prioritize measures that support the rapid enhancement of grid infrastructure.

In addition to infrastructure upgrades, PostEurop advocates for fiscal measures to lower the total cost of ownership for zero-emission vehicles. This includes vehicle incentives, support for HDV charging installations, and reduced energy costs. Such initiatives would facilitate the commercialization of zero-emission transport services, particularly for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) that face financial constraints when investing in high-cost solutions.

Moreover, the organization notes the pressing need for support in the installation of charging facilities at depots, which are essential for cost-effective energy rates and operational efficiency. The adoption of smart support schemes to expedite these installations is crucial for the decarbonization of the transport sector.

Recognizing the anticipated increase in peak grid demand, PostEurop emphasizes the necessity of supporting diverse technologies that can help mitigate energy demand during peak periods. Solutions such as biofuels, biogas, and battery storage can play a pivotal role in the transitional journey towards sustainability. They can ease the strain on grid infrastructure while providing operators with greater flexibility in deploying zero-emission solutions.

PostEurop remains committed to contributing to the Clean Corporate Fleets Initiative and advocates for urgent action from the European Commission to address grid infrastructure limitations. Without prompt and decisive measures, the ambitious goals of corporate fleet decarbonization may remain unattainable, highlighting the critical interplay between infrastructure development and sustainability in the transport sector.
