Record Demand for Nuclear Talent in the UK by 2026 Amid Major Projects
The UK nuclear sector is experiencing unprecedented demand for skilled professionals due to major projects like Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C. The talent shortage is exacerbated by clearance backlogs and competition from other sectors.

The UK nuclear industry is set to face a significant demand for experienced personnel in 2026, driven by active projects such as Hinkley Point C, which is under advanced construction, and Sizewell C, which has recently mobilised following its final investment decision. Additionally, the AWE warhead programme is expanding, and small modular reactor initiatives are underway, collectively creating the strongest job demand in over a decade.
The sector is particularly short on cleared engineers, including EC&I and EICA specialists, project controls professionals, and mechanical engineers. Clearance backlogs and competition from other industries further complicate hiring efforts, with average day rates for senior contractors ranging from £500 to £700 outside IR35. The economic impact of the UK digital skills shortage could reach £27.6 billion by the decade's end, intensifying the challenge for nuclear newbuild recruitment.
