Rescue Operations Underway at Chamoli Hydroelectric Project Tunnel
Sixteen workers have been rescued while three remain trapped after an incident at a hydroelectric project in Uttarakhand. The situation underscores the need for improved safety protocols in vulnerable construction sites during adverse weather conditions.

On Thursday evening, water and debris inundated a tunnel at the Tehri Hydro Development Corporation (THDC) Limited project in Pipalkoti, Uttarakhand, trapping three workers and allowing for the rescue of 16 individuals. Emergency responders, including the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), quickly mobilized to the site, where initial reports indicated 22 to 28 workers were on duty when the incident occurred.
The tunnel spans approximately 3 kilometers, and rescue efforts continue as authorities monitor the situation closely. The Chief Minister has prioritized the safe extraction of all trapped personnel and prepared for potential helicopter evacuations. Following heavy rainfall in the region, further safety measures may be necessary to prevent similar incidents in the future.
