Researchers Develop V-band Tunable Optoelectronic Oscillator Using Thin-Film Lithium Niobate

A research team has introduced a V-band ultra-fast tunable Fourier-domain mode-locked optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) utilizing thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) technology. This device operates in the 50 GHz to 75 GHz frequency range, enhancing photonic signal generation for applications in telecommunications, sensing, and frequency synthesis.

The integration of TFLN allows for high modulation efficiency and rapid frequency tuning, achieving switching rates of tens of megahertz per nanosecond. The OEO features a monolithically integrated TFLN waveguide and an optoelectronic feedback loop, improving signal integrity and reducing power consumption.

The device demonstrates exceptional spectral purity and stability, essential for applications like quantum computing and coherent communication. The findings indicate potential for mass production and integration with existing photonic systems, paving the way for future advancements in microwave photonics.
