Rheya Labs, a UK startup, has created backup batteries designed to maintain sewage pumping operations during power outages. The technology combines immediate battery support with predictive analytics to identify potential spill causes, addressing a significant environmental issue exacerbated by power failures and aging infrastructure.
Rheya is among 20 finalists in Ofwat's £7.5 million Water Discovery Challenge, with funding of up to £100,000 available for each participant. In comparison, Sydney Water is testing sodium-ion batteries for backup, and Viridi has implemented lithium-ion systems in New York. The efficacy of Rheya's approach, particularly its predictive capabilities, remains unverified in public trials, which may impact its adoption against established battery technologies.
