Romania's Energy Imports from Bulgaria Highlight Storage Capacity Disparities
Romania faces a daily energy deficit of at least 2,000 MWh during peak hours, leading to significant imports from Bulgaria. This situation underscores the need for Romania to enhance its energy storage capabilities to reduce dependency and stabilize prices.

Romania imports substantial energy from Bulgaria, particularly after 18:00 when domestic solar production declines. On August 12, companies imported energy in quantities ranging from 8 to 2,172 MWh, with evening prices reaching up to 487 euros per MWh.
Despite Romania's interconnection capacity exceeding 2,700 MW with Bulgaria, commercial exchanges remain unbalanced. Bulgaria's investment in battery storage, funded by the EU, contrasts with Romania's focus on solar subsidies for consumers.
As a result, Bulgaria acts as a regional energy buffer, allowing Romania to import stored energy at higher prices. Developing local battery storage capacities is essential for Romania to mitigate price volatility and enhance energy independence.
