Rong Bon Community in Chiang Rai Restores Forests to Reduce Haze Pollution and Earn Carbon Credits
The Rong Bon community in Chiang Rai has restored over 400 rai of degraded land, significantly reducing haze pollution and generating sustainable income through carbon credits. The initiative, started in 2001, has transformed the area into a model for wildfire prevention, resulting in nearly zero hotspots and improved water availability for local agriculture. The community is part of the 'Carbon Credit from Community Forests for Sustainability' project, successfully cutting emissions by 2,624 tonnes of CO2 equivalent.

The Rong Bon community in Chiang Rai province has restored more than 400 rai of degraded land, significantly reducing PM2.5 pollution. This restoration began in 2001 under village head Pranee Ratchakom, leading to a thriving forest buffer that now supports sustainable agriculture.
The community's efforts have nearly eliminated fire hotspots, providing year-round water for local farms. Rong Bon participates in the 'Carbon Credit from Community Forests for Sustainability' project, launched in 2021, contributing to a reduction of 2,624 tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions. Communities receive about 29,000 baht per rai over three years for limiting forest fires and managing funds.
