Russia's Rosatom Advances Floating Nuclear Power Plants Amid International Partnerships
Rosatom is constructing floating nuclear power plants with RITM-200 reactors, targeting Cape Nagloynyn by 2027. The initiative aims to meet Arctic energy needs and expand nuclear cooperation, particularly with Indonesia.
Rosatom is developing four floating nuclear power plants, each equipped with two RITM-200M reactors, with construction initiated in August 2022. The first two plants are scheduled for delivery to Cape Nagloynyn by early 2027, although delays are anticipated.
A notable shift occurred in 2017 when Rosatom decided to tow its Akademik Lomonosov without nuclear fuel due to regional concerns. The new plants are expected to generate 103 MWe each, requiring three units to support a mining project demanding 300 MWe.
Meanwhile, Rosatom and Indonesia have deepened their partnership, focusing on nuclear power plant construction and fuel exports, aiming to finalize a memorandum of understanding soon. This cooperation is critical as Russia seeks new markets amid sanctions and global supply chain issues.
